Real Time Information
Most employers will now report PAYE information to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in real time. You may see this referred to as Real Time Information – or RTI.
This means that employers (or their payroll bureau) will:
- Ssend details to HMRC every time they pay an employee, at the time they pay them either by Weekly or Monthly, 2 or 4 weekly respectively
- Use payroll software to send this information electronically as part of their routine payroll process.
Information sent will include all employee’s personnel details and all calculations involved in paying your employees.

Auto Enrolment Pensions
The 2012 Pension Reform legislation places a number of duties on employers around the provision of pensions savings for employees. A key mandate is that certain workers, known as eligible jobholders, must be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme that meets specific conditions (including making defined employee and employer contributions).
Payroll is at the heart of auto-enrolment. It is only at the point of payroll calculation that employers can make a timely and accurate decision as to when an employee passes the threshold for auto-enrolment. Once the payroll has been run the calculation for employees contribution and the employers contribution as a percentage can be worked out.
